What is Klimacore Fibreglass Mesh?

Klimacore is a professional-grade, alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh used to reinforce the basecoat layer in External Wall Insulation (EWI) systems. It is engineered to absorb thermal stresses and mechanical impacts, effectively preventing cracks in the final render finish. It is a mandatory component for both EPS and Mineral Wool insulation systems to ensure long-term facade durability.

  • Why does render mesh need to be alkali-resistant?
Standard glass fibre would be "eaten away" over time by the high pH levels (alkalinity) found in cement-based basecoats. Klimacore mesh features a specialized chemical coating that protects the fibres, ensuring the reinforcement remains strong for the entire lifespan of the building.
  • What is the overlap requirement for Klimacore mesh?
To ensure a continuous reinforced layer, every strip of mesh must overlap the adjacent piece by at least 10cm. Failing to overlap the mesh is the most common cause of vertical cracks appearing in the finished render.
  • Can Klimacore be used for internal plastering?
Yes. While primarily designed for external facades, Klimacore is an excellent solution for internal walls that are prone to cracking or for reinforcing joints between different building materials (e.g., where brick meets wood).
  1. Apply Basecoat: Spread a layer of basecoat (like CT 190, ZU) onto the insulation boards using a 10mm notched trowel.
  2. Embed Mesh: Lay the Klimacore mesh vertically into the wet mortar from top to bottom.
  3. Smooth Over: Use a flat trowel to press the mesh into the mortar until it is fully embedded and no longer visible.
  4. Overlap: Ensure each new strip overlaps the previous one by 10cm. Double-mesh areas around window corners (45-degree "butterfly" strips) for extra strength.
  5. Finish: Once the mesh is embedded, apply a second thin layer of basecoat to create a perfectly smooth surface for the primer and render.
  • Pro-Tip for High-Traffic Areas: If the building is a school or near a public walkway, we recommend "Double Meshing" the ground floor. Apply two layers of Klimacore to achieve Category I Impact Resistance, protecting the wall from kicks, balls, and bikes.
  • Pro-Tip on Placement: Never "dry-fix" the mesh to the wall with staples before rendering. The mesh must be embedded in the middle of the wet basecoat to work correctly as a reinforcement; if it sits against the insulation, it provides no strength.
