What is Ceresit CT16?

Ceresit CT16 is a high-performance substrate primer used to create a "key" for thin-layer renders and plasters. Its primary function is to reduce the absorbency of the substrate, improve adhesion, and prevent the background color from bleeding through the final decorative finish. It is the mandatory basecoat for Ceresit silicone and acrylic renders.

  • Why is Ceresit CT16 necessary before rendering?
CT16 contains fine aggregates that create a rough surface, giving the render something to "grip" (mechanical key). Without it, thin-layer renders may slip during application or peel over time.
  • Do I need to dilute Ceresit CT16?
No. Ceresit CT16 is a ready-to-use product. Adding water will reduce the concentration of the resins and significantly weaken the bond between the substrate and the render.
  • Can CT16 be tinted to a specific color?
Yes. It is highly recommended to tint CT16 to a shade similar to your final render (e.g., Ceresit CT74). This ensures that if the render is scratched or applied slightly thin in spots, the background color does not show through.
  1. Substrate Check: Ensure the wall is dry, stable, and free of dust or grease.
  2. Stirring: Mix the bucket thoroughly. The mineral fillers often settle at the bottom.
  3. Application: Apply a single, even coat using a wide brush or paint roller.
  4. Edge Work: Use a brush for corners and around window frames to ensure 100% coverage.
  5. Drying: Wait at least 3 to 6 hours before applying the top-coat render. The surface should be "scratch-resistant" when dry.
  • Recommended Top Coat: This primer is specifically designed for use with Ceresit CT74 Silicone Render.
  • Preparation: If the substrate is very dusty or "chalky," use Ceresit CT17 Deep Primer before applying CT16.

CERESIT CT 16 facilitates the application of thin-layer plasters and renderings inside and outside the buildings. It is recommended for priming the reinforced layers within CERESIT Ceretherm ETICS and traditional plasters. CT 16 can be applied to the surfaces of chipboards, gypsum cardboards, gypsum plasters, all types of concrete and strong paint coats.
